OpenAI GPT-4o — breakthrough voice assistant, new vision features and everything you need to know: OpenAI’s Spring Update event delivered on its promise of magic, introducing the new GPT-4o model for both the free and paid versions of ChatGPT. Along with a natural and emotionally intelligent voice assistant and vision capabilities! While the event left some updates undisclosed, it provided plenty to excite the AI enthusiasts in attendance. Among the highlights was the fully multimodal GPT-4o, capable of understanding speech, images, and video content, and responding in speech or text.
Meet Amazon Q, the AI assistant that generates apps for you! Amazon Web Services (AWS) continues to expand its generative AI solutions for streamlining business operations. Today, AWS announced the general availability of its AI assistant, Amazon Q. Initially introduced in November 2023, Amazon Q is now accessible to developers and businesses. Additionally, AWS released free courses on utilizing the AI assistant. And introduced a new Amazon Q capability, currently available in preview.
Google will soon start using GenAI to organize search results pages: At the 2024 Google I/O developer conference, Google announced its plan to incorporate generative AI into organizing entire search results pages for specific queries. This addition complements the existing AI Overview feature, which provides concise summaries of search topics. The AI Overview feature is now generally available after a period in Google’s AI Labs program. According to Elizabeth Harmon Reid, head of Google Search, the incorporation of generative AI into search results will have significant implications for online publishers.
A new era in neuroscience with generative AI: Researchers developed a groundbreaking model called Brain Language Model (BrainLM) using generative artificial intelligence. This model maps brain activity and its implications for behavior and disease. BrainLM leverages 80,000 scans from 40,000 subjects to create a foundational model. As such, this model captures the dynamics of brain activity without the need for specific disease-related data.
AI ethics surpass human judgment in new moral turing test: A recent study revealed that when individuals are given two solutions to a moral dilemma, the majority tend to prefer the answer provided by AI over that given by another human. The recent study, conducted by Eyal Aharoni, associate professor in Georgia State’s Psychology Department, was inspired by the explosion of ChatGPT and similar LLMs. “People will interact with these tools in ways that have moral implications, like the environmental implications of asking for a list of recommendations for a new car. Some lawyers have already begun consulting these technologies for their cases, for better or for worse. If we want to use these tools, we should understand how they operate. Their limitations, and that they’re not necessarily operating in the way we think when we’re interacting with them.”
Apple will revamp Siri to catch up to its chatbot competitors: Apple plans to announce that it will bring generative AI to iPhones after the company’s most significant reorganization in a decade. Apple’s top software executives decided early last year that Siri, the company’s virtual assistant, needed a brain transplant. The decision came after the executives spent weeks testing OpenAI’s new chatbot, ChatGPT.
AI is creating new roles and skills in data and analytics: A recent Gartner survey found that 67% of mature organizations are creating new roles for generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), with 87% of these organizations having a dedicated AI team. However, a 2024 survey of 479 chief data and analytics officers (CDAOs) revealed that a lack of skills and staff is a major roadblock to the success of their teams. With 53% of CDAOs surveyed having already deployed GenAI or committed to piloting it in the next six months, the need for specific capabilities within D&A teams is growing. Data engineers, data scientists, and machine learning (ML) engineers are already essential positions. However, CDAOs should also consider nascent roles to meet the increasing demands of AI adoption.
