Sweden Retains Global Innovation Stardom in 2026 GII Rankings

Sweden has reinforced its standing as an international technological powerhouse, ranking 2nd overall among 139 economies evaluated in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2026, published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Amid widespread economic turbulence and geopolitical uncertainty, Sweden maintained its position among the world’s elite innovation triumvirate, finishing directly behind Switzerland and ahead of the United States.

The United Nations (UN) agency’s findings underline Sweden’s efficiency in translating robust innovation inputs into top-tier commercial and intellectual assets, placing it 2nd among high-income economies and European peers alike. Nationally, Sweden achieved world-leading marks in Business Sophistication and Infrastructure, propelled by global number-one rankings in indicators such as researchers per capita, PCT (a statistical indicator that measures the inventive output of a country or economy based on the geographic residence of the inventors listed in published international patent applications filed through the Patent Cooperation Treaty) patent filings per GDP, and intellectual property trade payments. Sweden’s performance anchors Europe’s dominant presence at the frontier of global innovation, where European economies account for 14 of the world’s top 25 leaders.
