Canva announced a major expansion of its creative ecosystem through the dual acquisition of MangoAI and Cavalry. This strategic move signals Canva’s push to transition from a user-friendly graphic design tool into a comprehensive, professional-grade “Creative OS” that competes directly with industry giants like Adobe. By integrating these two specialized startups, Canva is effectively fusing high-end professional craft and the scalable, AI-driven workflows required by modern marketing teams.
Cavalry, a 2D animation platform based in the UK, brings a motion design engine to the Canva suite that is currently used by several major technology and media companies. This follows Canva’s previous acquisition of Affinity, professional photo, design, and layout software, with the goal of providing a more integrated workspace for vector graphics, photo editing and animation. MangoAI, based in San Francisco, specializes in reinforcement learning technology. Its algorithms are designed to analyze performance data to optimize video advertisements, allowing for content that can be adjusted based on engagement metrics.
In conjunction with these acquisitions, Canva has appointed MangoAI co-founder Nirmal Govind as its first Chief Algorithms Officer. The founders of both MangoAI and Cavalry will join Canva’s research and development divisions to assist in the integration of these tools for the platform’s 265 million monthly users.
