The UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has selected Anthropic to develop and pilot a dedicated AI-powered assistant for the government’s website – GOV.UK. Powered by the Claude AI model, the assistant is designed as an agentic system that moves beyond simple search results to provide tailored advice and active guidance through complex government processes.
Pip White, Anthropic’s Head of UK, Ireland, and Northern Europe, in the official statement noted that the partnership demonstrates how AI can be deployed for public benefit while setting a global standard for government integration.
The initiative is set to focus on employment services, assisting citizens in finding work, accessing training, and navigating available resources. By maintaining context across multiple interactions, the assistant will offer personalized support based on individual circumstances while ensuring users retain full control over their data in compliance with UK protection laws.
Before long-term independence, Anthropic engineers will work directly with civil servants at the Government Digital Service.
The UK government has also launched a massive expansion of its national skills strategy, offering free AI training to every adult in the country. The initiative aims to upskill 10 million workers by 2030, ensuring the British workforce can thrive alongside rapidly advancing technology.
Delivered through the new AI Skills Hub, the program features “bite-sized” courses with some of them taking less than 20 minutes. Participants can earn a government-backed “AI Foundations” digital badge by mastering practical skills such as content generation and administrative automation.
