OpenClaw Creator Joins OpenAI to Scale Open-Source AI Agent Vision

The creator of the open-source AI project OpenClaw, Peter Steinberger, has announced that he is joining OpenAI, American AI research organization, to further develop the platform’s capabilities and reach. The decision follows a week of discussions with major AI laboratories in San Francisco and a surge in global interest in the “playground project” over the past month.

According to the announcement, the collaboration is intended to provide the project with access to OpenAI’s latest models and research while maintaining its core mission of open-source accessibility. Rather than scaling OpenClaw into a standalone commercial entity, the creator expressed a preference for a research-oriented environment that focuses on building user-friendly AI agents and data ownership tools.

As part of the move, OpenClaw will transition into a foundation to ensure the project remains open to “thinkers and hackers” while supporting a variety of models and companies. OpenAI has committed to sponsoring the project and providing the creator with the resources to continue its development. The move marks a transition from an experimental hobbyist project to a structured part of the frontier AI research ecosystem.
