Technology company Einride and fresh food retailer Lidl in Germany have launched the country’s first cab-less SAE Level 4 autonomous truck operating in daily commercial service on a public road.
In the announcement shared by Enride it is stated that it is operating under a first-of-its-kind permit issued by Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), the driverless vehicle transports goods between a Lidl warehouse distribution center and a retail store. The clearance follows an extensive safety validation process confirming that the technology functions reliably under real-world conditions.
The companies, in collaboration with Schwarz Group entities Schwarz Corporate Solutions and Schwarz Digits, plan to expand the deployment toward a multi-stop route model to address driver shortages and strengthen supply chain resilience.
