Frankfurt Airport Becomes First in Europe to Launch Certified AI Security

Frankfurt Airport has officially become the first in Europe to launch AI-powered security screening at scale. Announced in late January 2026, Fraport and the German Federal Police have moved the Automatic Prohibited Item Detection System (APIDS) into regular operation across all terminals.

The technology, an AI software layer that integrates with Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, uses artificial intelligence in over 50 scanners placed across Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to automatically flag prohibited items like weapons or explosives in carry-on luggage. By highlighting suspicious objects with a red outline in real-time, the system allows security staff to analyze 3D images with greater precision and speed.

A key feature of the rollout is its national certification. Following months of intensive testing, the German Federal Police have approved the system for Germany-wide use, setting a new regulatory blueprint for other airports. While the AI significantly accelerates the process allowing many passengers to leave liquids and electronics in their bags, human officers remain “in the loop” to make all final security decisions.

Fraport’s €50 million investment in this infrastructure aims to eliminate “security theater” in a time of staff shortages, reducing wait times for travelers while maintaining the highest safety standards at one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs.
