The manufacturing industry has been defined by physical precision, focused on the tolerance of a piston, the torque of a marine engine, the efficiency of a supply chain. But at the Data Innovation Summit 2025 in Stockholm, Sudharshan Ravi, Head of Data at Volvo Penta, made one thing clear: the next era of industrial excellence will be defined by the precision of its data.
In his compelling session, “From Strategy to Execution: The Data Governance Rollout at Volvo Penta”, Ravi presented how a global leader in power solutions is navigating year three of its digital transformation. This is a blueprint for anyone struggling to move data governance from a “technical chore” to a “business imperative”.
The Vision: AI-Powered Sustainability
Volvo Penta operates in two high-stakes worlds: Marine and Industrial. Whether it’s powering leisure yachts or battery energy storage systems (BESS), their vision is: Pioneering sustainable power productivity, powered by AI and data.
Ravi emphasizes that their data strategy isn’t a standalone IT project. It’s built on three integrated pillars:
- Foundation: Cultivating a culture of experimentation and data literacy.
- Enablers: The “must-haves” which are governance, quality, and a unified Volvo Group data platform.
- Value Drivers: Solving real-world business pain points, from operational efficiency in factories to revenue generation through AI-enabled services.
“We don’t do anything in the enablers or foundation that is not needed to solve a business problem,” Ravi notes. This “value-first” approach prevents the common trap of spreading data efforts too thin.
Shifting Ownership to the Business
One of the most profound takeaways from Ravi’s session is the cultural shift regarding data quality. Three years ago, the sentiment was typical: “Can the IT guys just fix the data quality?” Today, that mindset has been dismantled. Through a comprehensive rollout of a common data governance framework across the Volvo Group, Volvo Penta has achieved high-level engagement from the C-suite down. They have moved from IT-led “fixes” to business-led “ownership.”
Ravi outlines a sophisticated role-based framework that harmonizes data and process management:
- Information Owners: Senior leaders (SVP level) who maximize data value and ensure quality within their domain.
- Data Stewards (Process & Data Managers): The hands-on heroes working within market units to detect, test, and improve ways of working.
- The Gold, Silver, Bronze Standard: A pragmatic approach to governance. Critical domains like Finance where data quality is non-negotiable receive “Gold” level intensity, while less defined areas start with a “Bronze” framework to avoid burnout.
Integrating with the “Digital Thread”
Governance at Volvo Penta isn’t happening in a vacuum. It is being woven into massive parallel initiatives, including a global SAP migration and the development of a PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) Digital Thread. By embedding data ownership into these core processes, Volvo Penta ensures that as their products become more digital, their data remains robust, auditable, and ready for the demands of the AI Act and the Data Act.
Unlock the Full Strategy
How exactly does Volvo Penta connects L0 and L2 process definitions and data metadata? What are the specific hurdles they faced when harmonizing roles across the entire Volvo Group? And how does their “customer-centric process management” track actually function on a day-to-day basis?
Sudharshan Ravi’s full presentation showcases the industrial-scale data strategy. It features deep dives into their information architecture, the specifics of their Master Data Management (MDM) forums, and the “push vs. pull” method of fostering a data-driven culture.
