Siemens Strengthens Semiconductor EDA Portfolio with Acquisition of Canopus AI

Siemens AG, German multinational technology company, has completed the acquisition of Canopus AI, a French startup specializing in computational and AI-driven metrology solutions. The move is aimed at strengthening Siemens’ Electronic Design Automation (EDA) portfolio to address the increasing complexities of advanced semiconductor manufacturing.

Canopus AI provides machine learning-based software for wafer and mask inspection. The company is known for its “metrospection” approach, which integrates artificial intelligence into metrology workflows to improve the precision of measurement data. This technology is particularly critical for manufacturers working on advanced technology nodes where sub-nanometer process control is required.

Siemens plans to integrate Canopus AI’s technology with its existing Calibre platform, a widely used tool for computational lithography and manufacturing simulation. According to Tony Hemmelgarn, President and CEO of Siemens Digital Industry Software, the combination will create an “end-to-end EDA digital thread” that links design more closely with manufacturing, helping chipmakers improve yield rates and reduce time-to-market.
