Netherlands-based chip company Axelera AI has announced the successful closure of a funding round exceeding $250 million, marking the largest-ever investment for a European Union AI semiconductor company. The round was led by Innovation Industries and other existing and new participants, including the European Innovation Council Fund. This brings the company’s total funding to more than $450 million since its beginning in July 2021.
In their statement they claim that Axelera AI’s “edge-first” architecture is designed to address the critical power and cooling constraints currently facing data centers by processing AI workloads locally on edge devices. This approach aims to make large-scale AI deployment more economically viable while enhancing data privacy and sovereignty.
To date, Axelera AI has shipped its technology to over 500 customers across diverse sectors, including defense, industrial manufacturing, robotics, and agritech. The new funding will also support the continued development of its Voyager SDK and the expansion of its Partner Accelerator Network to simplify AI integration for global developers.
