AI Alliance Launches Project Tapestry for Federated Open-Source AI Development

The AI Alliance, a global non-profit coalition of over 200 organizations, has launched Project Tapestry to pioneer a new era of open-source and sovereign AI development. This ambitious initiative aims to build a distributed, federated platform that enables institutions and nations to collaborate on training frontier open models without centralizing data or compute power.

The project is bolstered by the appointment of Turing Award laureate Yann LeCun as Chief Science Advisor, who will guide the technical implementation of the platform. LeCun emphasizes that AI should function as common infrastructure rather than being controlled by a few private entities.

By utilizing a federated architecture, Project Tapestry will allow participants to contribute to a shared global foundation while maintaining full control over their sensitive data and strategic autonomy. This approach empowers users to create “sovereign derivative models” tailored to specific cultural, industrial, and legal requirements.
