IBM Study Reveals Disconnect Between HR Leaders and Employees Over Essential AI Skills

A new global study from the IBM Institute for Business Value highlights a significant gap between executive expectations and employee perceptions regarding the skills required in an AI-driven workplace.

While 71% of Chief Human Resource Officers (CHROs) identify the ability to supervise, validate, and override AI outputs as the most essential workforce capability, only 29% of employees rank human judgment as important. Meanwhile, 60% of employees express concern over skills erosion, with critical thinking cited most frequently as declining, even as 57% of CHROs view critical thinking as a top priority.

The research, which surveyed 1,500 CHROs and 8,800 employees across global organizations, emphasizes that structuring clear roles, whether those being human-led, AI-assisted, or AI-executed, delivers an 18% reduction in risk and a 20% increase in quality. However, nearly half (46%) of surveyed organizations still exclude HR leaders from defining AI strategy. The study underscores that as AI automates routine processes, uniquely human traits like judgment, critical thinking, and oversight are becoming the primary drivers of enterprise value.
