Gartner’s Research Suggests Shift From ROI to Value Reinvestment in AI Strategy

A report from Gartner, Inc, global research and advisory firm, reveals a divide in the corporate AI landscape, noting that organizations reporting successful AI outcomes invest up to four times more in foundational data and analytics than their less successful peers. Despite this correlation, a recent global survey of over 350 technology leaders found that only 39% are confident their current AI investments will positively impact financial performance. To solve this, Gartner analysts suggest that data and analytics leaders must pivot toward an “AI-first” mandate through 2030, prioritizing trusted data, context foundations, and perceptive intelligence over simple model deployment.

The transition to successful AI integration, as noted, requires six fundamental shifts in organizational strategy, starting with a redesign of teams for human-agent collaboration. VP Analyst Rita Sallam notes that the future of work involves “tiny” teams whose impact is amplified by AI agents. Crucially, the report emphasizes that context is now mission-critical infrastructure and without a robust architecture that provides AI agents with governed, contextual access to data, autonomous functionality remains out of reach. Companies with high-maturity, AI-ready capabilities are already seeing up to 65% greater business outcomes in revenue growth and cost optimization.

Beyond technical infrastructure, the report highlights trust as a necessary catalyst for innovation. With only 23% of IT leaders expressing high confidence in their ability to manage generative AI security and governance, Gartner advocates for overhauling traditional controls in favor of automated, trust-based models that check for bias and compliance directly within workflows.
