Uber co-founder Garrett Camp has donated €5 million to the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) to advance human-centered AI. This January 2026 gift marks the Canadian entrepreneur’s first contribution to a European research institution.
The funding will support ISTA’s interdisciplinary work on “trustworthy AI,” focusing on transparency, causal reasoning, and resource efficiency. Camp selected the Austrian institute for its emphasis on long-term scientific rigor over short-term commercial speed. ISTA President Martin Hetzer described the donation as a major vote of confidence in Europe’s ability to shape responsible technology as the institute expands its global research footprint.
The investment arrives as ISTA continues a major expansion. The institute, which currently hosts roughly 90 research groups, plans to grow to 150 groups by the mid-2030s.
