Peter Vester: Scaling AI to 40,000 Active Users at Novo Nordisk

This week, we’re spotlighting Peter Vester, Principal AI Architect at Novo Nordisk. With a background in physics, Peter focuses on designing AI and generative AI solutions across Research and Development while leading strategic AI initiatives. His work balances technical architecture with executive stakeholder alignment to scale practical solutions across the organisation.

Among his key achievements is creating Novo Nordisk’s internal LLM platform, which now supports over 40,000 active users. His primary focus remains connecting advanced AI capabilities with real-world pharmaceutical needs, from accelerating clinical documentation to streamlining complex research workflows.

Hyperight.com: What’s the best way to describe your job to someone outside tech?

Peter Vester: I help people use AI to solve practical problems. In pharmaceutical research and development, that means helping researchers work faster and more efficiently, or reducing the time needed to prepare clinical documentation. My job is to connect what the technology can do with what people actually need, ultimately helping us bring products to market faster.

Hyperight.com: What originally sparked your interest in AI/data, and what keeps you inspired today?

Peter Vester: I have always enjoyed logical problems, which led me to study physics. What drew me towards data and AI was the opportunity to investigate: What is the data telling us? What are we missing? Where could an unexpected connection lead? It feels like a treasure hunt. That curiosity still inspires me, especially when a discovery becomes something useful. Finding an interesting pattern is rewarding; using it to create real value is even better.

Hyperight.com: What is one challenge you’re trying to solve, and why does it matter?

Peter Vester: One challenge I am focused on is shortening the time it takes to produce clinical documentation with AI. The opportunity is significant, but speed alone is not enough. The work needs to remain accurate, traceable, and suitable for expert review. For me, the architectural challenge is making AI useful within that demanding context. If we can reduce the effort spent preparing documentation while preserving quality, we can help specialists focus their expertise where it matters and support bringing our products to market faster.

Hyperight.com: A tool you can’t live without (tech or not)?

Peter Vester: Claude Code. It has fundamentally changed the way we develop code and how quickly we can explore ideas. For me, its value goes beyond producing code: it changes the rhythm of development. The important part is still knowing what you want to build and being able to judge the result.

Hyperight.com: What trend in data or AI do you think will shape the Nordic region the most?

Peter Vester: I believe agentic AI will have the biggest impact: systems that can carry out connected tasks and help automate business processes. For the Nordic region, I see a major opportunity to move beyond individual productivity gains towards improving how entire workflows operate. The decisive factor will be how well we integrate these systems into everyday work, with clear responsibilities and appropriate human oversight. The most valuable applications will solve concrete business problems and deliver benefits people can actually recognise.

Hyperight.com: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to others entering the data and AI field?

Peter Vester: Get your foundations right. You do not need to understand every theoretical detail before you begin, but you do need a solid grounding in data handling and basic statistics. Those skills help you ask better questions, spot misleading results, and understand whether a solution works. Stay curious, experiment, and keep connecting what you learn to problems that matter. Tools will keep changing, but sound judgement about data will remain essential throughout your career in this field.
