BMW has claimed the title of the first automotive manufacturer to integrate Amazon’s next-generation Alexa+ technology, signaling the end of the “clunky” voice command era. Debuting in the all-electric BMW iX3 (the first of the “Neue Klasse” models), the updated Intelligent Personal Assistant uses generative AI to provide human-like responses and deep vehicle control.
The system, which will run on the new BMW Operating System X, will act as both a vehicle expert and a general knowledge companion. Drivers can now ask for technical advice while simultaneously requesting a summary of world news or managing their smart home lighting. To ensure safety and performance, the assistant will use a hybrid model: it pings the cloud for complex “world knowledge” queries but retains local processing for critical cabin functions like climate control and window operation, ensuring these work even without a cellular signal.
Starting in the second half of 2026, the LLM-powered assistant will be rolled out via over-the-air updates to all BMW models equipped with Operating System 9 and X, with the United States and Germany serving as the initial launch markets.
