VAST Data Powers Sovereign AI Cloud for Canada’s Top Supercomputer Centers

VAST Data, a leading AI infrastructure company, has been selected by major Canadian research centers, including SciNet at the University of Toronto and SHARCNET at the University of Waterloo, to standardize their high-performance computing on the VAST AI Operating System. As Canada’s largest supercomputing facility, SciNet provides researchers with the massive computational resources and expertise necessary to perform large-scale scientific simulations. SHARCNET, a consortium of 19 academic institutions, operates a “cluster of clusters” linked by advanced fiber optics to accelerate the production of research results across Ontario.

This initiative supports a new wave of GPU-accelerated research and the development of sovereign cloud infrastructure, ensuring that sensitive data remains under domestic control. By utilizing a Disaggregated Shared-Everything architecture, these institutions are consolidating complex storage tiers and burst buffers into a single, unified platform designed to keep large-scale GPU clusters fully saturated for AI training and inference.

This deployment enables thousands of researchers across fields like bioinformatics and physics to process massive datasets in real-time with enterprise-grade security and auditable governance.
