OpenAI has begun testing ads in ChatGPT for logged-in adult users in the U.S. on the Free and Go subscription tiers. According to their statement, the ads, which will be clearly labeled and visually separated from AI responses, will be designed to fund the infrastructure needed for free and low-cost access. High-tier plans like Plus, Pro, and Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers will remain ad-free.
The company ensures that ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers and that conversations remain private from advertisers, who only receive aggregate performance data. Ads will be targeted based on the topic of conversation and past interactions but will not appear for users under 18 or near sensitive topics like health and politics. Free tier users who wish to avoid ads will be able to either upgrade to a paid plan or opt out in exchange for a lower daily message limit.
