Europe Seals €129 Million Deal to Transform MareNostrum 5 into AI Powerhouse

The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) officially signed a landmark procurement contract to transform the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer into a specialized “AI Factory”.

The €129 million upgrade, awarded to a consortium led by FSAS Technologies (Fujitsu) – Japanese multinational IT equipment and services company and Telefónica – a Spanish multinational telecommunications company, will equip the Barcelona-based machine with next-generation GPUs and specialized hardware for training large language models.

Funded jointly by the EU, Spain, Portugal and Türkiye, the project aims to provide European startups and researchers with the sovereign computational power needed to compete globally.

According to the EuroHPC JU, the installation is set to begin immediately, with the new AI partitions expected to be fully operational by mid-2026.
