Meeting Autonomy with Autonomy: BCG Report Warns AI Attacks are Outpacing Global Defenses

A recent report from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) warns that corporate defences are failing to keep pace with the rapid evolution of AI-driven cyber threats. While 60% of companies report being targeted by AI-powered attacks in the past year, only 7% have deployed AI-enabled defenses.

The study highlights a dangerous “speed gap” fuelled by underfunding and a severe talent shortage, with 69% of firms struggling to hire AI-cybersecurity experts. Recent high-profile failures demonstrate that traditional, passive security is no longer viable. This includes a $25 million deepfake fraud and AI-led ransomware.

BCG concludes that the only winning strategy is for enterprises to “meet autonomy with autonomy,” deploying autonomous security systems to counter attackers operating at machine speed.
