World Bank Launches First Digital Strategy and AI Readiness Initiative to Drive Growth in Emerging Markets

The World Bank Group announced its first digital strategy, combining its public and private sector arms to broaden affordable internet access, enhance public services, and spur employment across developing nations.

The strategy focuses on practical applications, particularly task-specific “small AI” tools tailored to local contexts, such as assisting farmers with crop disease management or helping health workers deliver care. The World Bank Group also introduced the AI Infrastructure and Readiness Initiative, partnering with industry players like NVIDIA and Cassava Technologies to offer shared, pay-as-you-go GPU computing capacity.

The initiative outlines four core pillars: expanding network connectivity, reducing the costs of devices and data, enhancing digital skills and public service systems, and supporting country readiness for artificial intelligence. By tackling hardware bottlenecks, data accessibility, and practical AI tooling, the World Bank aims to provide the underlying digital architecture required to drive enterprise productivity and regional data maturity.
