OpenAI’s Bold Nordic Expansion: Betting Big on Stockholm

The Nordics have always had a big name in the global tech arena, but a new chapter is being written. As shared on the linkedin profile by Nicolai Skabo – Head of GTM, EMEA at OpenAI, they plan to establish its first Nordic hub in Stockholm later this year, turning it into the epicenter of regional artificial intelligence.

This is a calculated move into one of the world’s most sophisticated digital landscapes. Sweden offers a rare, high-octane mix of elite engineering talent, legendary global brands, and a relentless startup ecosystem. It’s the ultimate launchpad for an AI pioneer looking to scale its European footprint.

The data driving this decision reveals that Scandinavia is adopting AI at a very fast pace.

Over the past twelve months, ChatGPT’s weekly active users across the region have surged by more than 50%. Enterprise and developer integration has API usage multiplying nearly fivefold year over year. Nordic businesses are embedding it into the core of their operations.

The most telling metric belongs to the builders. OpenAI’s advanced coding assistant – Codex, has weekly active users jumping by more than 10x since the beginning of 2026. This exponential spike means the software powering the region’s future is actively being co-authored by AI, charging local innovation.

With this move, OpenAI will have a dedicated local presence that will allow the company to support the developers, startups, corporations, and public institutions that are actively reimagining what is possible. On their call for new employees, they have already started to search for the next engineers for the startups.

The global AI race is accelerating, and this signals that the Nordics are securing a front seats. Stockholm, the future is officially knocking on your door.
