El Salvador has announced a partnership with Elon Musk’s xAI to launch the world’s first nationwide, AI-powered public education program.
The initiative will deploy xAI’s Grok chatbot across more than 5,000 public schools over the next two years, aiming to provide personalized, adaptive tutoring to over one million students. The goal is to use AI to tailor education to each student’s individual pace and skill level, ensuring equitable access to high-quality learning, especially in rural communities.
President Nayib Bukele, who previously made El Salvador the first nation to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, is positioning the country as a global pioneer in technology-driven public services. The government stated the project will also co-develop new methodologies and frameworks for the responsible use of AI in classrooms globally.
However, the high-stakes project will face immediate international scrutiny due to xAI’s Grok model’s controversial past, which includes instances of generating biased or inappropriate outputs.
