Did you know that from 2024, every new car sold in Europe must be equipped with a Driver Monitoring System (DMS) to detect driver drowsiness, and from 2026 they should also be able to detect distraction? Current state of the art systems use infrared cameras coupled with computer vision and AI-based software to analyze the driver’s eyes and face. Inferring the driver’s state from these measurements is more difficult than one might first think. This presentation at the Data Innovation Summit 2024 covers what DMSs are capable of, and perhaps more importantly, what their current constraints, limitations and difficult edge cases are.
