Anders Butzbach Christensen: Don’t Build AI, Build Organisations That Can Use It

This week we spotlight Anders Butzbach Christensen, Senior Director of Digital Innovation & AI at DOVISTA. After starting his career in software development, Anders has spent the past decade helping global organizations turn business strategy into lasting digital capabilities. Today, he believes competitive advantage comes not from AI itself, but from building organizations that know how to use it.

Hyperight.com: What’s the best way to describe your job to someone outside tech?

Anders Butzbach Christensen: I usually tell people that I don’t build AI. I help build organisations that can continuously create business value through Digital, Data and AI. Technology changes every year. Organisations don’t. The real challenge isn’t implementing AI. It’s creating the conditions where people, technology and business strategy come together to improve how the company operates.

Hyperight.com: What originally sparked your interest in AI/data, and what keeps you inspired today?

Anders Butzbach Christensen: It actually started with software. Two classmates introduced me to programming in high school, and I immediately loved the fact that you could build products with almost no capital. It didn’t matter where you came from. If you were curious and willing to learn, you could create something that people found valuable. That idea still motivates me today.

I’ve never been particularly interested in technology for technology’s sake. I’ve always been interested in what technology makes possible.

Today I get the most energy from solving problems nobody has solved before, bringing together talented people, building high-performing teams, and creating capabilities that continue generating business value long after the original project has finished.

Hyperight.com: What is one challenge you’re trying to solve, and why does it matter?

Anders Butzbach Christensen: I think many organisations are solving the wrong problem. The question isn’t: “How do we implement AI?” The question is: “How do we become an organisation that continuously creates value through Digital, Data and AI?” That’s a fundamentally different challenge.

Technology is only one part of the answer. Leadership matters. Culture matters. Governance matters. Data matters. Throughout my career I’ve become increasingly passionate about building those foundations. At LEGO we built a Self-Service Data Platform and a global Data Engineering organisation that allowed teams across the company to innovate faster. Later, at Bunker Holding, my focus shifted towards translating business strategy into enterprise capabilities through Enterprise Architecture, Data and AI.

Those experiences taught me something that has become a core belief. Technology doesn’t transform organisations. People do.

Hyperight.com: A tool you can’t live without (tech or not)?

Anders Butzbach Christensen: A physical whiteboard. Without question. I’m a very visual thinker, and almost every important discussion starts with a marker in my hand. Whether we’re discussing strategy, designing enterprise architecture or exploring new product ideas, I find that people solve problems better when they can see them. A whiteboard creates shared understanding.

Once we’ve built that understanding, I bring AI into the conversation. I regularly use ChatGPT and Claude as thinking partners. Not to replace the discussion, but to challenge assumptions, explore different perspectives, sketch architecture concepts and help us think beyond our first idea. To me, that’s where AI creates the most value: not by replacing human collaboration, but by making it better. The whiteboard helps us think together. AI helps us think further.

Hyperight.com: What trend in Data or AI do you think will shape the Nordic region the most?

Anders Butzbach Christensen: I don’t think AI models will become competitive advantage. Everyone will have access to increasingly capable models. The organisations that stand out will be the ones that learn how to continuously turn that technology into business value. That’s not primarily a technology challenge, it’s an organisational one. The winners will build trusted data foundations, reusable platforms, responsible governance and leaders who understand both business and technology.

The Nordic region already has strong traditions of trust, collaboration and digital maturity. If we combine those strengths with AI, I think we have an opportunity to build organisations that don’t just become more efficient, but fundamentally better at innovation.

Hyperight.com: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to others entering the Data and AI field?

Anders Butzbach Christensen: Stay curious. Technology will change, probably faster than any of us expect. Don’t define yourself by a programming language, a cloud platform or the latest AI model. Define yourself by your ability to learn, solve problems and create business value.

I’d also encourage people to say yes to opportunities that feel slightly bigger than they’re ready for. Some of the biggest opportunities in my own career came because someone trusted me with responsibilities I hadn’t held before. Those experiences accelerated my learning far more than staying inside my comfort zone ever could.

At the end of the day, people won’t remember which AI model you used. They’ll remember whether you solved meaningful problems, whether you helped others succeed, and whether you left the organisation stronger than you found it.
