ChatGPT Dominates with 66% Market Share as Gemini and Grok Record Rapid Growth in 2025

As of late 2024 and through 2025, ChatGPT has maintained a dominant market position, holding approximately two-thirds of the generative AI chatbot market share, though its lead is facing increasing pressure from diversified competitors.

The report from Similarweb, AI-Powered Digital Data Company, indicates that while ChatGPT’s share has fluctuated between 60% and 82% depending on whether web traffic or active app users are measured, the platform reached a massive milestone of nearly 900 million weekly active users by late 2025. This sustained dominance is largely attributed to its first-mover advantage and the rapid rollout of multimodal features like GPT-4o and the $200-per-month Pro tier, which has solidified its status as the default tool for both casual consumers and enterprise professionals.

Google’s Gemini has emerged as the most significant challenger, roughly doubling its market share over the last 12 months to reach approximately 14% to 15%. This growth has been fueled by deep integration across the Google Workspace ecosystem and the launch of advanced reasoning models such as Gemini 2.5 Pro, which features a massive one-million-token context window. Simultaneously, xAI’s Grok has seen rapid adoption since its launch, capturing about 2% to 3% of the market. Grok’s momentum is driven by its real-time access to X (formerly Twitter) data and the release of Grok 3 and Grok 4, which have outperformed competitors in specific mathematical and reasoning benchmarks, making it a preferred choice for users seeking trending insights and technical accuracy.
