The multinational technology company Apple Inc. announced plans to introduce additional privacy controls for Full Disk Access (FDA, a specialized macOS permission that allows software to read and modify protected system files).
According to the company, developer APIs are designed to deliver powerful application features alongside user data protections. Apple noted that some developers are utilizing FDA in ways that expose system files, mail, private messages, and browsing histories without full user knowledge or clear consent. The company highlighted that this exposure can also compromise the privacy of contacts communicating with those users.
Apple also emphasized that addressing this issue is critical as AI agents become increasingly capable and autonomous, which substantially elevates the security risks associated with system-wide access. To mitigate these risks, upcoming changes to macOS will require very explicit user action and clearer warnings before FDA privileges can be granted, ensuring users fully understand the implications before making decisions about their data and privacy.
