Nvidia Licenses Groq Tech: The Battle for AI Inference

Nvidia has made a major strategic move by entering into a non-exclusive licensing agreement with the AI inference startup Groq. While reports on the deal’s exact structure varied, the arrangement is officially being described as a massive “talent and technology grab” that allows Groq to remain independent while Nvidia absorbs its leadership and core intellectual property.

While Nvidia dominates 80-90% of the market for training AI models, the “Inference War” of 2026 is heating up. Companies are moving from building models to deploying them at scale, where speed and cost-per-query are the most critical metrics.

The agreement centers on Groq’s specialized LPU (Language Processing Unit) technology, which is widely considered the fastest in the world for AI inference (the process of running pre-trained models like ChatGPT).

This deal follows a recent “Big Tech deal spree” where giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta have used licensing fees and “acquihiring” to secure startup talent while avoiding the antitrust scrutiny that comes with full mergers.
