The enterprise foundation Novo Nordisk has awarded up to DKK 100 million (EUR 13.3 million) over four years to launch AI4GRIDS, a Nordic research initiative led by universities in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.
The initiative aims to address the challenges of growing electricity demand and the integration of renewable, weather-dependent power sources, such as wind and solar, alongside assets including electric vehicles, heat pumps, batteries, and data centers. By combining artificial intelligence with mathematical grid models, AI4GRIDS seeks to equip human operators with decision-support tools that can perform computations up to 100 times faster, enhancing resilience and reducing risks of brownouts and blackouts.
Expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027, the project is headed by the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in collaboration with Lund University and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
Over its four-year course, the initiative will train more than 30 PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and specialists while collaborating with power system operators, regulators, and technology developers to create scalable operating methods across Europe.
