Grok, Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, has seen the first ban in Indonesia and Malaysia following its widespread use to generate non-consensual sexual deepfakes.
This happened on Saturday, January 10, with Indonesia’s government citing the tool as a “serious violation of human dignity.” Malaysia followed on Sunday, January 11, after identifying “repeated misuse” of Grok to create explicit images of women and minors. Both nations, which have strict anti-pornography laws, deemed xAI’s existing safeguards as insufficient, including a recent move to limit the tool to paid subscribers.
Access remains temporarily blocked in both countries and it is expected to remain suspended until xAI and X Corp implements verifiable technical barriers to prevent the creation of harmful content.
As of today, xAI has not officially commented on this issue.
