Nordic Expansion: UpCloud Opens Sustainable data center in Copenhagen

UpCloud officially launched its new data center in Copenhagen, Denmark, on December 16, 2025. UpCloud is a European cloud service provider offering cloud servers on an hourly billed infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and their facility is located in Ballerup, approximately 15 kilometers from central Copenhagen. It is designed to support low-latency workloads across Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and the Baltic states. This expansion increases UpCloud’s global network to 14 locations, with 9 of them situated in Europe.

The data center operates entirely on 100% renewable energy and incorporates heat reuse technology to contribute to the local district heating network. It offers a geodiverse site for disaster recovery and redundancy, separate from UpCloud’s other major European hubs. The infrastructure features MaxIOPS storage and current-generation AMD EPYC processors, providing a 30% to 40% performance increase over previous generations.

The launch is a key component of UpCloud’s broader Nordic expansion strategy, which includes a planned data center in Norway to establish native infrastructure across all four major Nordic countries. The site provides an additional option for businesses to meet European Union data residency and sovereignty requirements, ensuring that data processing and orchestration remain entirely within European jurisdiction. Available services at the Copenhagen site include cloud servers, block storage, private cloud, managed Kubernetes, and managed databases.
