Google Quantum AI Scientists Win 2025 Nobel Prize

Google Quantum AI’s Chief Scientist of Quantum Hardware, Michel Devoret, and former hardware lead, John Martinis, have been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics alongside John Clarke of UC Berkeley. 

This is major news in both the scientific and technology sectors. This validates decades of fundamental research that directly led to the current race in quantum computing.

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to a trio of researchers whose foundational work decades ago is now powering the modern race for quantum computing. The scientists share the prize for their discovery of “macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit.”

The award recognizes their groundbreaking experiments in the mid-1980s that proved that the bizarre rules of quantum mechanics could be observed and controlled in a macroscopic electrical system, specifically in a superconducting circuit containing a Josephson Junction effect, wich is a phenomenon that occurs when two superconductors are placed in proximity

This pivotal discovery established that a system of billions of electrons could be engineered to behave as a single, unified quantum entity. This principle is the direct foundation for the superconducting qubits (quantum bits) currently used by major technology platforms like Google and IBM to build powerful quantum computers.

The prize is hailed as a major validation for the field of Quantum 2.0, celebrating the transformation of esoteric quantum theory into practical, cutting-edge technology.
